Midnight flight

When we woke in the middle of the night we were lying on our backs, side by side and holding hands. Our free arms were flung out as though we were flying through the air, my hair pushed sideways lifted by a breeze. Our legs were apart as we leapt across the backdrop of our bed.

When we woke in the middle of the night it was from a dream: we were connected by threads all about our bodies. They were silver threads like spiders might throw out to build their webs. And they began somewhere inside each of us, extended as our limbs parted and coiled back as we returned. We played, watched grinning as we pulled our hands back and forth seeing the threads appear and disappear.

You couldn’t let me go even if you wanted to.

But I don’t want to.

It was true, or not.

When we woke in the morning the dreams of sky dancing still excited us. There was no thread between us but we lay together and we had not let go.
